Chobi

My present hostel demands a two minute walk to get into the place where we receive our daily meal. There are mainly two people working at the fooding sector, one is Chobi and the other is Mumpi. The former one often gets me into thinking. For example today when i went there to have my lunch,Chobi was serving food to the other hostel boarders who had arrived there before i did and then all of a sudden Chobi exclaimed-'paliye gele bachi' [running away from this place will provide me with some relief].She said that with a smile and a sigh on her face. And that somehow made me feel sorry for her.At some remote corner of my heart,i could connect with her because she too stays away from her home, her family but she toils harder than most of us because providing meal to over 150 people in a day that too for two times, washing all our dishes and keeping our dining table as clean as possible is not that easy. But she does it.I do get to see that exasperated Chobi when she is called upon by almost all of us-'Chobi taratari bhat de,office jabo[Chobi, give us rice,we are getting late for our office], Chobi ar koto deri hobe[Chobi, how much more time do you require to get us our meal/].That day when i asked her for an extra 'papad',she said that she has already provided me with three 'papads' and that she cannot give me more.I tried to convince her with all my silly expresions so that i can get hold of one 'papad'-she smiled, but she did not give me.The vanwala who brings in food for us from Ghoshpara is Chobi's lover.A sense of totality and assurance is reflected in her eyes when she sees him but a sense of childishness too, well prevails.I will be leaving my present hostel within a period of six months and that is all i am waiting for truely and after that probably i will be engaged in some other field but i often wonder if Chobi ever asks herself that whether she will be confined in this place forever and secretly wanting to escape and live, yet never voice a word and go on serving us all. Will she forever be this Chobi? After all she is just 14.
