Today was one of those days when I had the time and mood to watch a good movie and I finally watched The Castaway. Useless to tell that Tom Hanks nailed his character as always. But more than that there were so many other things that I fell in love with in this movie. The graphics, the costume, the direction and location were not only perfect for the modern adaptation of Defoe's Crusoe but all quite sufficiently was able to echo the quest of an existentialist and the hopelessness of an absurdist. The man god relation or the man nature relation could not have been better portrayed with all its zeal. Nature has its own ways to tell us that we are nothing but playthings to her. From being in an airplane to being on a lonely island with noone around, not even wild animals not only brings out the atom of the horror of a perfect nightmare but also makes us realize how things can change so fast within a matter of a few minutes such that a man can and is forced to drink just like an animal does with its tongue out. A man is forced to live away from the comfort zone of the present generation and go back and live the lifestyle of the men of the stone age period only to yearn and go back to the comfort zone and then find difficulties adjusting to it. A man is made so lonely that he gets attached to a branded Wilson ball with a face drawn with blood on it such that even the picture of the protagonist's girlfriend becomes secondary to it. A man gets attached to something that has no life in it except for the perceptive nd imaginative life the victim is able to imbibe inside it. Ain't that both good and bad? Ain't it not exactly our contemporary lifestyle where we cling ourselves to stuffed toys or our cell phones which has no life in it. What for? Is it because we don't want to think that we are alone or is it because we have already accepted that we are and cannot do anything about it except for postponing what we are waiting for. Yeah, " waiting for godot" precisely by " not wanting to wait for it". The movie does not only represent to us the symbolic value of life in its best and at its worst but also helps us comprehend that nature has its own way of restoring back what it takes away. Whether it is the bright big sun outside the cave of the victim instaed of the fading worn out torch or the crossroads that gives us ample opportunities to live our lives even after terrible and disastrous breakdowns right from embracing the beautiful love of our lives to boldly accepting what was not meant to be can never be. And also it is not necessary to marry the person you love but continue loving the person you could never marry. Right in the end when the protagonist looks at the camera and smiles at the audience does not only provoke us to smile at our own innocense but also helps us understand how important it is to embrace the make belief world to survive and also to keep ourselves ready for any change that can shake us at any moment. Life is so unpredictable after all. P.S- I wonder how this movie would have worked out if there was a female in the lead role instead of a male? Would not it have been more challenging for the director to present the woman on screen and show her suffering because of her monthly menstration. Even the film industry is so anti feminist sometimes. They are afraid to show the reality? Why? Either because they think women are not competent enough or maybe they think of the mainstream audience who still think that women talking openly about something like periods is abnormal. The reason why we get our sanitary napkins from a pharmacist wrapped in a black plastic or paper. I guess I have started speaking in a different context. What can I do? My anger and hatred for the cheap narrow mentality is shockingly real.
