Changes in Education in West Bengal
Our very own 'didi', finally banned riots in Bidhan Sarani. It was more like banning students who found joy in agitations and fights. It has become a trend to protest on streets near a college campus and sometimes people join in even without knowing the cause and sometimes despite knowing the cause they are just one more element of disorder in the crowd, with nothing significant to contribute from their side. I have seen intellectuals talk about such things , but they keep quiet when the name of their campus is involved. Probably they view it as an Utopian land where nothing can go wrong and they fail to see the innumerable raised eyebrows at them. Anyway. Moreover while discussing the education sector in West Bengal a few more things were brought to the notice of our Chief Minister. It was about the excessive amount that a private school often charges as donation from the students and no doubt the best schools of Kolkata were included in the list- like La Marts, Modern High, St Xavier's, Heritage, Shri Shiksayatan. A committee of members have been appointed for all districts and small town private schools, one representative for each location, to probe into the matter. Our Chief Minister questioned the very English medium-ness of schools and I was all applaud for her. Not only this it was even more shocking to hear that some schools regularly educate students about politics illegally. Well now one knows, how schools, business and commerce among themselves. The better a school tag, more the corruption, more the snatching away the money from the middle class hands. The higher education sector was also given the due attention. Since the HRD board has been quite incapable to serve the needs of the research scholars in West Bengal ( both M.Phil and PhD students), our Chief Minister also wrote a letter to the HRD board informing them about the shortcomings and also sanctioned a twenty crore amount as scholarship from the Ramakrishna Vivekananda Merit cum means scholarship for such scholars. Our Chief Minister also had her deep condolences with the students belonging to the General category.Seems like some long time, well needed changes have finally been made. Let's see what happens next.
